The Last of Us star Storm Reid has shared a powerful message to homophobic viewers of the series.

In the hit HBO post-apocalyptic drama, Storm plays Riley, protagonist Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) love interest.

Riley was introduced in the most recent episode of the show that follows Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) continued fight for survival.

The series has drawn praise for its depiction of same-sex relationships. In its third episode, the show focused on the love affair between Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlet).

Previously, The Last Of Us was review-bombed by angry homophobes upset by the depiction of a gay love story.

“Like Bella said when episode three came out: If you don’t like it, don’t watch,” Storm said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“We are telling important stories,” Storm shared. “We’re telling stories of people’s experiences, and that’s what I live for.”

“If you’re concerned about who I love, then I need you to get your priorities straight.”

“That’s what makes good storytelling because we are telling stories of people who are taking up space in the world.”

“It’s 2023. If you’re concerned about who I love, then I need you to get your priorities straight,” the actor continued.

“Why are you concerned that these young people – or anybody – love each other? Love is beautiful, and the fact that people have things to say about it, it’s just nonsense.”

In a joint interview with Them, Storm and Bella both expressed their joy that the show dedicated attention to a queer romance.

“I just hope that it makes people feel things and think about their relationships,” Bella shared. “Ellie’s gayness is one of the reasons I love playing her so much, and I’m so excited to explore that more in season two.”

The Last Of Us is available to stream now on HBO Max.
