Rupert Everett has reflected on past comments about former friend Madonna, including the time he called her a “whiny old barmaid.”

The Happy Prince actor opened up about the remarks in an interview on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories.

Everett was famously close with the ‘Material Girl’ singer after starring alongside her in 2000 movie The Next Best Thing. He also appeared in Madge’s video for ‘American Pie’ [below].

“She was really charming”

On the latest episode of the show, Piers tells Rupert: “I thought I was opinionated. You take it to a whole new level. Rupert Everett, how did you describe Madonna? Can you remember?”

“Well, a screechy barmaid” replies the star.

To this Morgan replies: “You didn’t finish there, hang on, you called her an old whiny barmaid. A curious little thing. Satan and a She-man. And you appear surprised that it put a little fraguar over your relationship.”

Everett then replies [as per The Sun]: “The whiny old barmaid was meant to be a compliment because, the thing about Madonna, when she was very young was she can’t talk like that [whiny voice] half the time, you know, and she really got guys like that. And she was really charming.

“That wasn’t meant to be rude actually.”

Everett made the original comments about Madonna in his 2006 memoir Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins.

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
