Call Me by Your Name is returning to select cinemas during Pride Month, days after renewed speculation around a possible sequel to Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed 2017 drama.

The film is being screened as part of LGBTQ+ cinema programming at venues in the US throughout June, with repertory cinemas revisiting queer titles including MoonlightParis Is Burning and God’s Own Country.

It follows a teaser shared by Sony Pictures Classics earlier this week, which prompted a sequel frenzy among fans.

Why were fans expecting a Call Me By Your Name sequel?

Sony posted a short clip from the film on social media alongside the caption: “Tomorrow…. #cmbyn,” leading to online theories ranging from a 4K restoration to long-discussed sequel plans.

Directed by Guadagnino and adapted by James Ivory from André Aciman’s 2007 novel, Call Me by Your Name stars Timothée Chalamet as Elio Perlman, a 17-year-old who falls for Oliver, a 24-year-old American graduate student played by Armie Hammer, during a summer in northern Italy in 1983.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 before opening in UK cinemas later that year. Sony Pictures Classics acquired worldwide rights ahead of its Sundance debut.

The coming-of-age drama received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Chalamet, who became one of the youngest nominees in the category’s history. Ivory won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards.

Luca Guadagnino previously confirmed he was interested in continuing the story

Discussion around a sequel has circulated for years. Guadagnino previously confirmed he was interested in continuing the story, while Aciman released sequel novel Find Me in 2019.

In a 2020 interview, Guadagnino said a follow-up film was still planned, with Chalamet, Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg and Esther Garrel expected to return. However, development later stalled following the COVID-19 pandemic and controversy surrounding Hammer.

A synopsis reads: “Amid the sun-drenched splendour of their surroundings, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.”

While the film is not receiving a nationwide UK rerelease, select venues including Picturehouse Cinemas, The Garden Cinema in London and The Light have scheduled one-off and limited screenings.
