Elton John has been announced as the first headliner for Brazil’s music festival Rock in Rio 2026, marking his first show in the country in nearly a decade.

He is set to perform on 7 September 2026, in what is expected to be one of his largest concerts since ending his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in 2023.

Elton accepted “immediately,” adding: “I love my Brazilian fans… I really cannot wait to return.” He will headline the Palco Mundo (World Stage), closing the night.

“We’re not just bringing Elton John back — we’re bringing a living legend” – Rock in Rio creator Roberto Medina on Elton John headlining

Festival creator Roberto Medina said: “Rock in Rio was born to create unforgettable memories. We’re not just bringing Elton John back – we’re bringing a living legend.”

He added: “Having Elton with us, after announcing his retirement from touring in 2023, reinforces the power of Rock in Rio to unite people through music.”

Since the festival’s creation in 1985, Elton joins a star-studded list of past performers such as Queen and Coldplay, “both of whom turned their shows into something legendary,” Medina said.

“When Rock in Rio asked me to play, I said yes immediately” – Elton accepting Rock in Rio headlining spot

Elton spoke about his excitement about headlining Rock in Rio: “I’ve always had a fantastic time whenever we’ve played in Brazil. I didn’t manage to get to South America for the farewell tour, so when Rock in Rio asked me to play, I said yes immediately.”

Speaking about his Brazilian fans, the former Attitude cover star said: “They hold such a special place in my heart. The energy these big one-off shows have been giving me since I stopped touring is unbeatable.”

He added that his band is performing better than ever: “We’re playing brilliantly, sounding as good as we ever have, and, importantly, we’re still really loving playing together. I really cannot wait to return to Brazil next summer.”

“2026 will be an emblematic year” – Medina is thrilled to have Elton on board

Elton last performed in Brazil in 2017, playing in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo on his Wonderful Crazy Night tour.

Medina concluded: “2026 will be an emblematic year – and we’re thrilled to welcome one of the greatest artists of all time.”

Tickets for Rock in Rio Card 2026 will go on sale 9 December, via Ticketmaster Brasil.
