Watch | Donald Trump’s first TV ad is as controversial as you’d expect

By Will Stroude

Despite leading the polls in the Republican presidential nomination race for several months now, Donald Trump has yet to release an official televised campaign ad – until now.

The result is as unpleasant as you’d expect, with some of the billionaire businessman’s most controversial policies – many of which has been denounced as avowedly racist by both Democrats and Republicans alike – set side-by-side over the course of the 30-second clip.

The TV spot – entitled ‘Great Again’ – promises the US public a temporary but complete ban on all Muslims from entering the United States, as well as building a wall across the US-Mexican “that Mexico will pay for”.

“The politicians can pretend it’s something else, but Donald Trump calls it radical Islamic terrorism”, the voiceover says. “That’s why he’s calling for a temporary shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until we can figure out what’s going on.

“He’ll quickly cut the head off ISIS and take their oil. And he’ll stop illegal immigration by building a wall on our Southern border that Mexico will pay for.”

The voiceover is followed by a clip of Trump at a campaign rally, telling supporters: “We will make America great again.”

The ad is set to begin airing tomorrow, reports Politico, with just 28 days until the first nomination vote begins with the Iowa caucus.
