Thousands of Australians rally for gay marriage

By Fabio Crispim

Thousands of Australians are marching at same-sex marriage rallies across the country today ahead of the July 2nd election.

Demonstrators are urging whichever party wins the election next week to legislate same-sex marriage.

According to the Daily Mail

, Conservative Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull supports same-sex marriage and has pledged a public vote on it before the end of 2016.

The labour parliament however will skip a public vote and introduce the legislation to parliament within 100 days if they win the election.

The Labour party has said that they view the public vote as “expensive” and “pointless” but Turnbull has defended his decision saying he can’t hold a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage because, “he is not a dictator”.

Protestors all over the country are now marching with rainbow flags and signs reading, “Equality now”.

Australian polls suggest that both parties are now on equal footing.

Australia has been criticised by international human rights groups for its ‘slowness’ to act on same-sex marriage.
