Robert Mugabe has criticised Europe’s acceptance of so-called “homosexual nonsense” – and fired back at the continent’s refusal to accept him as a leader.

The President of Zimbabwe addressed thousands of spectators at an event to mark 34 years since the nation attained independence from the United Kingdom, Yahoo News reports.

He said during his speech: “The Europe of yesterday is gone; we have a Europe of today which has no principles at all. The Europeans will never ever accept a [Mugabe’s party] ZANU-PF government in this country. What is natural is made unnatural. And what is unnatural they want to say it is natural.”

The 90-year-old leader then added: “[Europe says] If you pass a law that rejects homosexual marriages we will punish you like they are doing to Uganda and us. Let Europe keep their homosexual nonsense there and not cross over with it here.”

During a speech as his daughter’s wedding reception last month (March), Mugabe claimed to have only very recently become aware that there are gay people living in Zimbabwe.

“I understand we have a group of homosexuals in this country,” he said at the time. “I didn’t know until I was told the day before yesterday. So we want to check on who is in that group.”
