Republican Congressman attempting to ban gender neutral toilets

By Josh Haggis

A US Congressman is attempting to ban gender neutral toilets outright.

Republican state Congressman Jeff Pogue has filed two bills that would make all public toilets that don’t explicitly state the gender they should be used by illegal in the state of Missouri.

“I’m wanting to protect the social norms of our state, the same social norms that have operated in our state since the organization of Missouri in 1820,” Pogue told the Columbia Daily Tribune.

Following backlash from numerous LGBT groups, Pogue attempted to clarify what he meant by “social norms,” insisting that the bills would “protect children against predators” and have “nothing” to do with the trans community.

Pogue’s bill echoes a move earlier this year by Kentucky’s Republican State Senator C.B. Embry, who endorsed a bill that would chastise trans students for using the ‘wrong’ bathroom. Find out more here.
