Olympic boxer Nicola Adams is going professional
Olympic champion boxer Nicola Adams won’t be defending her title at the 2020 Olympics, after turning professional.
Adams, 34, rose to fame when she became the first woman to win an Olympic boxing title, at London 2012, in the women’s flyweight division, and then successfully defended her title at the Rio games in 2016, making her the first British boxer to retain gold in 92 years.
She will make her professional debut in Manchester on 8 April before fighting in her home city of Leeds the following month.
Now signed with promoter Frank Warren, Adams – an Attitude Award winner in 2014 – told the BBC: “My hero was Muhammad Ali. I said after watching him I wanted to box at the Olympics and turn pro.
“I can’t wait to get in the ring and start working towards becoming a world champion.”
