A new documentary about LGBTQ+ rights in Brazil will air today (April 5).
In the latest Unreported World series, the first episode, Carnival Wars, follows the LGBTQ community in Brazil after the election of the right-wing, homophobic president Jair Bolsonaro.
Following his election in January this year, there has been a sharp increase in homophobic attacks and abuse and it’s no surprise after the President has openly stood by his anti-LGBTQ stance, even declaring he would kill his son if he was gay.
He was replaced by another openly gay man David Miranda earlier this year.
The summary of the first episode – which is set to air this Friday (April 5) at 7.30pm on Channel 4 – reads: “The Government’s instantaneous removal of LGBTQI concerns from the Human Rights Ministry, coupled with Bolsonaro’s commitment to ‘traditional family values’ and the loosening-up of gun laws, casts a heavy shadow Brazil’s Queer community.
“But it’s fighting back, transforming the hedonistic days and nights of São Paulo’s carnival into a space for protest, and demanding that homophobia, like racism, be criminalised.
“We follow black, lesbian rapper, Luana Hansen, as she challenges the values of the Right through her music and performance, whilst raising her children with her partner, Glaucia, in an increasingly intolerant Brazil.”
Carnival Wars will be broadcast this Friday (5th April) at 7:30pm on Channel 4.
