LGBT Foundation calls for Boris Johnson to act on reforming the Gender Recognition Act

The LGBT Foundation has called for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to act on reforming the Gender Recognition Act.
Last week, Boris Johnson took over as Prime Minister after Theresa May stepped down and more than a third of his new party voted against marriage equality and he does not have the greatest track record when it comes to LGBTQ rights.
And now, the LGBT Foundation have joined a number of charities, including Stonewall and the Albert Kennedy Trust, and campaigners such as Munroe Bergdorf, Olly Alexander and Jade Thirwall, calling for the new PM to act on amending the Gender Recognition Act.
In the letter issued to Boris Johnson, it states that thousands of trans and non-binary people ‘still wait in limbo’ for an announcement on amends to the act and called for the new PM to ‘ensure trans and non-binary people across the UK have the rights they need and deserve’.
Paul Martin OBE, the chief executive of LGBT Foundation, said: “This letter was written because we are calling on the Government to finish the job they started on reforming the Gender Recognition Act.
“We have come together – as charities, campaigners, activists and spokespeople to reiterate how critical these reforms are to removing the barriers that trans and non-binary people face every day.
“Right now, as hate crime against trans people is increasing and vitally needed reforms risk being kicked into the long grass, there has never been a more crucial time to be an ally to trans and non-binary people.”
