Kim Davis’ one gay friend has come forward, and he ain’t happy with her

By Will Stroude

So apparently anti-gay Christian pin-up girl Kim Davis wasn’t lying when she told Good Morning America that she had gay friends earlier this week – the only thing is, she might not have them anymore.

The Kentucky country clerk has been at the centre of a media storm in recent weeks after being briefly incarcerated over her refusal to grant marriage licences to same-sex couples, but after her most recent comments an old gay friend from her past has got in touch with The Daily Beast to say that he doesn’t recognise the woman he sees now.

Dallas Black of Morehead, Kentucky, explained he has known Davis his whole life and is even distantly related to her first husband, and that they became close after she helped him with paperwork at the clerk’s office after his mother died.

He says that though Davis isn’t someone he “would get lunch with,” she would give him advice, and that the woman he sees know is dramatically different to the one he knew before she turned to religion in recent years.

“Even after this all started, I went in a few days later and we spoke,” he said. “We talked about how each other were feeling, and how we’re gonna be friends even after all this.”

He continued: “I really don’t know who Kim is at the moment. I really want to believe that the kind, sweet person who was there when my mom passed away is still there,” he said. “I was friends with Kim in the past, but I don’t know this woman I’ve been seeing.”

Davis is back at work and still not issuing marriage licenses while her case is under appeal. U.S. District Judge David Bunning denied Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis' request to delay his ruling from last week ordering her to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. That ruling followed the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in June legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. Black admitted was surprised with just how vigorously Davis was fighting against gay marriage.

“I somewhat feel like she is taking this to an extreme, because she didn’t become a Christian until four years ago,” he said of the media storm surrounding Davis and the local community.

“Kim Davis has become the face of Morehead, and that’s not the face we want to portray”.

He added that while he’d always be there for Kim if she needed him, she won’t be on the guest list should he ever get married himself.
