Devon pub owned by gay couple targeted with homophobic vandalism

By Will Stroude

A South Devon pub owned by a gay couple was targeted with homophobic graffiti in the early hours of this morning (November 29), the Torquay Herald Express reports.

Dan Simpson and Lee Boxall own the Globe Inn on Plymouth Road, South Devon. At around 4am, the pub’s CCTV cameras were sprayed, as well as the windows and doors. The word “puff” [sic] was written on one of the walls in spray-paint.

Dan said that the incident has been reported to the police as a hate crime. Speaking to the Herald Express, he explained how the local community has rallied around the couple since the attack on the pub.

“What is heartening though is that I put out a shout out for any volunteers to help clean graffiti off the pub, and people came down and helped out. Already the graffiti has been scrubbed off the wall.”

He added: “There was some real community spirit shown and it is great that people did come out and support us.”

Figures suggest that anti-LGBT hate crimes are on the rise, with more than 1,000 cases reported in London in the past six months alone – a 10 per cent increase on previous figures.
