Golden Girl

star Bea Arthur’s shelter for homeless LGBT youth is set to open in 2017.

Gay Star News reports that the late actress, who died in 2009, left $300,000 (Around £229,000) in her will to support the Ali Forney Centre, one of the largest LGBT community centre to help youths.

The Bea Arthur Residence was expected to open this summer however building regulations had caused setbacks and it’s now reported that the shelter will open in February next year.

Shortly before her death, Arthur promised she’d do anything she could to give homeless LGBT youth a home and in an interview with Next Magazine she said:

“These kids at the Ali Forney Centre are literally dumped by their families because of the fact that they are lesbian, gay or transgender – this organisation really is saving lives.”

The Bea Arthur Residence will also offer on-site counselling to the LGBT youth members.
