Attitude’s historic Prince William feature named Scoop of the Year at BSME Awards

By Will Stroude

With the end of the year fast-approaching, we’re thrilled to reveal that our historic cover feature featuring Prince William has been named ‘Scoop of the Year’ at the British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) Awards.

His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge made history earlier this year when he became the first member of the British royal family to appear on the cover of an LGBT publication, after Attitude facilitated a meeting between the Duke and 9 LGBT+ people to discuss the devastating consequences of homophobic bullying,

The story attracted global news coverage, sending an important statement about gay acceptance and equality around the world, where homosexuality remains illegal in 77 countries – many of them in the Commonwealth, of which William will one day be head.

Attitude received the ‘Scoop of the Year’ award at last night’s BSME Awards at the The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Hotel following a unanimous decision by the judges.  November at The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane Hotel, London.

Reacting  the win, Editorial Director and former Editor Matthew Todd spoke of how “proud” he was that the feature had been recognised.

“Having Prince William on our cover speaking out against homo, bi and transphobic bullying and highlighting the mental health ramifications of such bullying, was an historic first which sent a message out across the world,” he said.

“I’ve always been very proud that Attitude is the only gay magazine to have ever even been nominated for a BSME award, having now won four. We go up against the biggest magazine brands in the country and winning is testament to all the hard work of the team in the office.

He added: “Even though this was my last issue as editor, Attitude will continue to lead the way, as it did with LGBT mental health, on this and other important issues that affect the lives of LGBT+ people.’
