Adam Lambert and Sense8’s Miguel Angel Silvestre cover Attitude’s July issue

The Queen frontman and the hottest man on TV talk about sexuality and society

By Steve Brown

To mark July’s new issue, Queen frontman Adam Lambert and Sense8’s hot Miguel Angel Silvestre lead the two covers.

The American Idol star who was the first out gay man to score a Number 1 Billboard album is back in the UK joining Queen on their tour.

In Attitude’s exclusive interview, the singer speaks about what Freddie Mercury’s legacy means to younger LGBT+ artists today, and his own experience of being proud in his sexuality in today’s music industry.

He says: ““Obviously Queen really inspired me. I don’t think this album is genre-specific. I think there are a lot of different influences on it.

“There’s rock, there’s funk, there’s soul, there’s disco, Seventies singer-songwriter pop and some Eighties flavours, too. That said, there are a lot of modern influences as well, so it’s sort of a fusion.”

Silvestre – who is best known for playing closeted Latino TV star Lito on Netflix’s hit show –  speaks about the final episode of the fan-favourite series Sense8 and reveals what the show taught him about the beauty of embracing his sexuality, and why he isn’t ashamed if people think he is gay in real life.

“You just have to let yourself go and trust in it,” he adds.

“But when we were going to do some of the ‘edgier’ scenes, [director] Lana Wachowski would talk to us about how important it was for her totell this story, and how sexuality is important to her because it’s about a connection and empathy, and it speaks about a vulnerable place where we are all the same deep down.

“She made us feel that we were doing something worthwhile. In the end, we were like a family that made out with one another. To begin with, maybe we were nervous or shy but eventually you get to a point where you are comfortable.”

Elsewhere in this issue Rupert Everett discusses the relevance of Oscar Wilde in today’s society.

The issue also features the enigmatic serpentwithfeet, new singer Belgrave, RuPaul’s Drag Race season 10 contestant Eureka, the Naked Poet, and two people share their disturbing first-hand experiences of gay-cure exorcisms. Plus, the real-life story about a man left paralysed after a horrific homophobic stabbing  – and how he is seeking to forgive his attacker.
