Sam Smith is reportedly engaged to fashion designer Christian Cowan after more than three years together.
Page Six reports that the pair were overheard discussing their engagement at The Mark Hotelahead of the Met Gala on Monday night (4th May).
The couple arrived at the annual New York fashion event in matching black Erté-inspired looks designed by Cowan, who completed his outfit with a large yellow diamond ring reportedly created by Cartier. Images from the red carpet quickly prompted speculation online before reports of the engagement emerged later in the evening.

“From what I understand, it was a private engagement,” a source said. “They are over the moon, and from what I hear, so in love!”
Smith later shared photos of the pair’s coordinated Met Gala outfits on Instagram, alongside a caption credited to Cowan describing the inspiration behind the designs.
“I have always loved Erté. I love the way he brought costume art to the world through his visionary illustrations,” the post read.
“The infamous 1920s opulence and craft. 255,000 individual crystals and beads. 2,000 hours of artisanal hand sewing. This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam.”
When did Sam Smith and Christian Cowan start dating?
Smith and Cowan were first linked publicly in December 2022 after attending a White House ceremony where then-US President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law. The legislation guarantees federal recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages in the United States.
Since then, the pair have regularly appeared together at fashion shows, public events and in New York City. They made their official red carpet debut as a couple at the 2024 Met Gala and returned together again in 2025 before this year’s appearance fuelled engagement reports.
Cowan, who launched his namesake label in 2017 after studying at the London College of Fashion, has dressed stars including Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Cardi B.
