Madonna has released Confessions II – The Film, a new visual project tied to her forthcoming album of the same name.
The short film premiered at New York’s Tribeca Festival on Friday (5 June) before being released globally via YouTube today (8 June). Directed by David Toro and Solomon Chase, who collaborate as TORSO, the project brings together a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Sabrina Carpenter, Julia Garner, Kate Moss, Richard E. Grant, Shygirl and Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon.
It marks the latest chapter in the singer’s return to the world of Confessions on a Dance Floor, her Grammy-winning 2005 album.
What happens in Madonna’s Confessions II – The Film?
The project is set to the first six songs from Madonna’s forthcoming album and follows her as she is pursued by a SWAT team of robot-like women carrying cameras.
Beginning with Madonna in an apartment, singing ‘I Feel So Free’, the scene moves to a forest where she dances with a group of scantily clad men and women. Madonna described the sequence as featuring people with “lasers coming out of every orifice”, with thin green beams appearing to shoot from between the dancers’ legs.
Other scenes show Madonna driving a car, visiting a nightclub and attending a dance party in a crowded bathroom. The Queen of Pop said the bathroom sequence includes several celebrity appearances and teased that it contains the project’s biggest Easter egg-style cameos. The film ends with Madonna returning home as the party continues.
Confessions II – The Film premiered at the Beacon Theatre as part of Tribeca Festival, where Madonna joined the directors for a post-screening discussion. Its online release comes just days after the singer staged an unannounced performance in Times Square to coincide with Pride Month.
When will Confessions II be released?
Presented in partnership with Grindr, the event saw Madonna perform new material from Confessions II alongside songs from COADF. Fans gathered in the heart of Manhattan after details of the show began circulating online shortly before she took to the stage.
Confessions II is set to be Madonna’s first studio album since 2019’s Madame X. The record reunites her with producer Stuart Price, who produced the original COADF.
Confessions II arrives on 3 July, while Confessions II – The Film is available to watch now.
