‘You’ star James Scully says Forty Quinn is not straight

"He's not, and he never will be."

You star James Scully has denied his character on the series, Forty Quinn, is straight.

The 27-year-old actor, who joined the cast for season two of Netflix’s hit psychological thriller series, made the suprise announcement in an Instagram Q&A over the weekend, saying: “He’s not [straight], and he never will be”.

Forty was introduced in the second season of You as the twin brother of Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley)’s new love interest Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti).

Established as a flamboyant, quick-witted LA socialite, the character subverted stereotypes – and the expectations of many viewers – when he was shown to be romantically interested in women.

According to Scully, however, that doesn’t mean Forty should be labelled ‘straight’.

Taking part in an Instagram Q&A over the weekend, the former Heather star was quizzed about the character’s sexuality by a fan, who asked: “Since you’re queer, what made you guys decided [sic] that forty would be straight.”

Scully replied: “We didn’t, and he wasn’t, and he’s not, and he never will be.”
