Watch Madonna’s surprise Met Gala performance

The Queen of Pop reigned supreme in New York on Monday night (May 7).

Madonna ensured attendees at New York’s Met Gala were given a truly religious experience on Monday night (May 7) with a surprise performance at fashion’s biggest night of the year.

The pop superstar, who wowed on the red carpet in a Jean Paul Gaultier gown, black net veil and glittering, crucifix-adorned crown, led the post-dinner festivities with haunting renditions of ‘Like a Prayer’, Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ and a brand new song.

Flanked by dancers dressed in religious habits, the performance inside the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was filmed by Vogue and – handily for fans – streamed live by Donatella Versace herself.

With a theme of ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’, the annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute saw A-listers including Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Amal Clooney celebrate haute couture fashion in some truly awe-inspiring outfits.

Madonna, who turns 60 this year, has been busy working on her forthcoming 14th studio album as well as raising her expanding brood of children, which includes 5-year-old twin sisters Ester and Stella, who she adopted from Malawi last year.

With it now more than three years since Madge’s last record – 2015’s criminally-underrated Rebel Heart – Monday night’s performance was a welcome reminder that we need the Queen of Pop back in our lives stat.
