Rupert Everett will investigate the sex industry for a new Channel 4 documentary.

The actor has co-written and will present Love for Sale, which asks why people really buy and sell sex.

The documentary is described as “a bold and highly personal take on ‘the world’s oldest profession'”. It will air in two parts, beginning with Why People Sell Sex, and concluding with Why People Buy Sex.

Everett said: “Prostitutes are the world’s unacknowledged experts on our most intimate desires.”

In the first programme, Everett will meet a number of sex workers including a young rent boy in Tel Aviv, Israel, a single mother living in Exeter, as well as a high class Brazilian escort who charges £700 per hour for her services.

The actor and writer will also share the story of his late friend, whose brutal murder brought home to him the dangers sex workers face.

In the second programme, Everett will talk to self-confessed sex addicts, as well as interviewing Russell Brand about his own experiences.

Sara Ramsden, Commissioning Editor for Specialist Factual for Channel 4, said: “Rupert has a unique authorial voice and his opinions range from the theological to the ideological. It’s great to see someone stand up so strongly for the dignity of women living with very difficult choices.”
