Olly Alexander proudly performs with rainbow flag during show in Poland

By Will Stroude

Olly Alexander has made no secret of his ‘Desire’ to inject some much-need queer visibility into the world of pop, and the 25-year-old continued to put his money where his mouth is during Years & Years’ show in Poland last week (March 16).

Taking to the stage at Warsaw’s Trowar Arena, the Shine singer was captured on camera as he grabbed a rainbow flag from an audience member and promptly proceeded to drape across himself as he performed the band’s track ‘Gold’ – much to delight of the watching audience.

The pointed demonstration from the former Attitude cover – who previously described older members of the gay community as his “heroes” for their part in the fight for LGBT equality – star comes in a country that remains incredibly divided over the issue of gay rights.

While several left-wing political parties in the socially conservative Catholic country support the introduction pro-gay legislation, the country’s ruling Poland’s Law and Justice Party remains opposed to the introduction of equality measures such as marriage, civil unions and adoption.
