Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy lead all-female ‘Ghostbusters’ re-boot

By Will Stroude

Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy will lead the cast of an all-female reboot of Ghostbusters, the film’s director has confirmed.

The Bridesmaids co-stars will be joined on the upcoming re-make of the classic sci-fi comedy by fellow Saturday Night Live comedians Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

Director Paul Feig – who also worked with the pair on Bridesmaids and The Heat – seemingly confirmed the news on Twitter after he posted a picture of all four actresses.

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson played the ghost-hunting quartet in the hit 1984 original, which was followed by a sequel, Ghostbusters II, five years later.

Murray recently gave his seal of approval to rumours that Wiig and McCarthy would star in the film, saying: “I’m fine with it. I would go to that movie, and they’d probably have better outfits, too.

“Melissa would be a spectacular Ghostbuster,” he continued. “And Kristen Wiig is so funny – God, she’s funny!

Feig first teased the re-make’s all female twist last year, saying: “Ghostbusters is such a great thing and everybody knows it. It’s a shame to just let this thing sit there.”

“My favourite thing to do is work with funny women. I was like, what if it was an all -female cast? That would be really fun.”

Ghostbusters is scheduled for release on July 22, 2016.
