Jonathan Rhys Meyers has joined the cast of Roland Emmerich’s upcoming gay rights film Stonewall.

The film – based on the 1969 riots seen as the starting point for the modern gay rights movement in the US – is expected to be released some time in 2016.

Meyers will play a character called Trevor in the film, THR reports. The Irish actor, 36, is best known for his starring roles in Showtime’s The Tudors and NBC’s recently cancelled series, Dracula.

In addition to Meyers, veteran actor Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and 14-year-old actress Joey King (White House Down) have also been added to the cast of Stonewall, and will star alongside War Horse actor Jeremy Irvine, whose role has already been announced.

The Stonewall riots began in response to a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn, a well-known gay bar in the Greenwich Village district. America’s first gay rights marches took place a year later in New York, LA and Chicago to commemorate the anniversary of the riots.
