Hugh Jackman‘s wife has addressed long-standing rumours her husband is gay in a new interview.

Deborra-Lee Furness, who married The Greatest Showman actor in 1996, made the comments while speaking on the Anh’s Brush With Fame TV series in Australia yesterday.

And she didn’t mince her words while shutting the claims down.

“I see these magazines, and they’re so mean-spirited,” she said. “So I hope people don’t buy these magazines and realise it’s all made up.”

Asked directly if Hugh is gay, Deborah, also an actor, laughed and said: “He’s been gay so many years! I was gay too. You know when I did Shame? I was gay. There was shock when I got married.”

Furness was referring to her 1988 film Shame, in which she plays an avenging motorcyclist.

The 64-year-old continued: “It’s just wrong. It’s like someone saying to Elton John he’s straight. I’m sure he’d be pissed. He’s not straight!”

Good point.

According to Metro, Jackman addressed the gay rumours himself in a 2018 US radio interview, saying: “Some dudes do get upset, some dudes say, “Don’t say I’m gay” [but] I am good.”

He added that he believes the rumours started when he played a gay singer-songwriter in stage show The Boy From Oz in 2003. “I was literally just locking lips… I started to laugh so hard,” Hugh explained.

“So I stay kissing him, because I thought, ‘I’m just going to laugh. I’m going to stay here until it subsides’ and it never subsided and the whole audience could see my body shaking, so they started.”

Jackman and Furness are parents to two children: Oscar, 20, and Ava, 15.

Speaking out to celebrate their 24-year wedding anniversary earlier this year, Jackman said on Instagram: “These 24 years have been the best of my life! And, as far as I can see, we keep getting better. I love you Debs with every fiber of my soul. Happy anniversary. [sic]”
