‘House of Cards’ creator on Underwood’s sexuality: ‘He has a large appetite’

By Josh Haggis

The creator of House of Cards has spoken out about the sexuality of the political drama’s main character.

Viewers of the popular Netflix Original series, which debuted its third season last month (February), have seen Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) have a smattering of sexually-charged scenes with men, despite him having a wife.

In a new interview, the show’s creator Beau Willimon has explained that despite viewers trying to label Underwood, the character is simply a man with “a large appetite”.

“He’s a man with a large appetite, he’s a man who does not allow himself to be placed in any sort of milieu or with one definition,” Willimon told The Huffington Post.

“I think he’s incredibly guarded with who he lets get close to him, whether that’s platonic or whether that’s sexual. And when he does, it’s not necessarily a gender or preference, it really has to do with trust,” he added.

House of Cards is available exclusively on Netflix in the UK.
