Danny Dyer has revealed that he is “really proud” to have been part of EastEnders‘ recent ‘coming out’ storyline.

The actor joined the BBC soap in December as Mick Carter, and his on-screen son Johnny (Sam Strike) came out as gay in scenes aired earlier this month (January).

He will appear on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday (February 1).

Speaking about the scene where Johnny told Mick he was gay, Danny told Jonathan Ross: “It was a real positive thing. A lot of young gay men, who hadn’t come out yet, they saw that scene and I was getting letters from these guys saying they came out the next day because of it.

“That’s a powerful thing and I was really proud to be associated with that.”

He added that it was nice to see Mick accept Johnny’s sexuality, rather than reacting badly to it.

“They spun it on the head for me, because obviously my perception and what people think I’m about – that I was going to react badly – and instead I just cuddled him and said, ‘Listen, it’s fine, I love you, no problem.’”

Danny admitted that he feels “honoured” to be working on the long-running soap.

Danny Dyer, Goldie Hawn, Peter Andre and Liam Neeson will appear on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday at 9.35pm on ITV.
