Britney Spears to appear at GLAAD’s Spirit Day for LGBT youth

The pop icon will appear at the kick-off rally for annual event against LGBT bullying and harassment on Thursday (18 October).

After headlining Brighton Pride earlier this summer, Britney Spears is set to make another show of solidarity with the LGBT community as part of GLAAD’s Spirit Day 2018.

The ‘Womanizer’ singer, 36, will make a special guest appearance at the event’s kick-off rally in Las Vegas this Thursday (18 October) as people across the world come together to show solidarity with victims of homophobic, biphobic an transphobic bullying.

Spears’ appearance will coincide with a special announcement which the pop icon teased during an appearance on The Ellen Show last week.

Her involvement in Spirit Day comes after the star was honoured with GLAAD’s Baguard Award earlier this year.

“I feel like our society has always put such an empaghsis on what’s normal, and to be different or unusual is seen as strange,” she said as she accepted the award. 

“But to be accepted unconditionally… is such a blessing. Events like this show the world that we are no alone. We can all join hands here and know that we are all beautiful.”

Now in its eighth year, Spirit Day is observed on the third Thursday of October during National Bullying Prevention Month in the US, and sees people encouraged to wear purple in solidarity with LGBTQ youth, who disproportionately face bullying and harassment because of their identities. 

The event was started created in response to a spate of bullying-related suicides of gay school students in 2010, including that of Tyler Clementi, who took his own life aged 18 after his college roomate sceretly filmed im kissing another man before posting the footage online.
