Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo cast in the Wicked movie

Ari will play Glinda and Cynthia will play Elphaba!

It’s a good day for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo fans – both stars have been cast in one of the most hotly-anticipated films of the decade: Wicked.

‘Positions’ singer Ari will play Glinda and Bad Times At the El Royale star Cynthia will play Elphaba in the project, due to begin shooting next year.

The film, directed by by Jon M. Chu, will be based on the hit musical written by Winnie Holzman. The prequel story to The Wizard of Oz premiered in 2003.

“Thank goodness”

Ariana confirmed the news on Instagram last night, posting pictured of herself, Cynthia and Jon on a Zoom call, along with the caption: “Thank goodness.”

The star also posted a picture of flowers sent to her by Cynthia, with a note reading: “‘Pink Goes Good With Green’ Congratulations Miss A, the part was made for you. I look forward to sharing the musical journey with you. Love, Cynthia.”

Cynthia meanwhile shared a picture of flowers sent to her by Ariana, and a note saying: “Dear Cynthia, honoured doesn’t even begin to cover it, I cannot wait to hug you. See you in Oz. All my love, Ari.”

Jon is known for directing this year’s musical hit In The Heights, while Cynthia was Oscar-nominated for her performance in Harriet.
