Lily Allen will headline Latitude festival this Friday (July 18) after Two Door Cinema Club were forced to pull out of the event.

The Hard Out Here singer was announced as a last-minute replacement after the indie band’s frontman Alex Trimble collapsed at Seattle airport.

“It is with a heavy heart that we are going to need to cancel our upcoming shows at Latitude and Bournemouth Academy. Alex collapsed at Seattle airport on the way to London and has been hospitalised with a chronic stomach complaint”, the band said in a statement on their website.

Allen has since confirmed that that she will fill in for the band on Friday night.

“I’ve never been to Latitude but I hear it’s fabulous, and “I can’t wait to get my heels on for some serious dancing action on Friday evening – so, so excited,” the 29-year-old said, after confirming the news on Twitter.

However, Allen was soon forced to defend herself after receiving abuse on the site, saying that she hopes disappointed festival-goers will still enjoy her set.

Melvin Benn from Latitude organisers Festival Republic said: “We are honoured that Lily Allen is able to step in at the last minute and would like to thank her for filling the headline slot. After her show-stopping performance at Glastonbury, Lily was a natural choice. The Latitude audience are in for something really special.”

Following the release of comeback album Sheezus – which topped the UK’s Official Albums Chart earlier this year – Allen has performed live sets at festivals including Glastonbury and Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

The Black Keys and Damon Albarn will headline the other two nights at Latitude, which takes place in Henham Park, Suffolk this weekend (July 17-20).

Kelis, Haim, Robyn & Röyksopp and Budapest singer George Ezra are among the other acts set to perform over the weekend.
