Sam Smith has entered the UK’s Official Singles Chart at Number One with Money on My Mind.

The single, taken from his forthcoming debut album In the Lonely Hour, sold 108,000 copies this week to become his first solo chart-topper.

Smith, 21, from Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire, previously made Number One with last year’s La La La, a collaboration with producer Naughty Boy.

“It feels unbelievable, man! It’s completely overwhelming and I don’t actually know what to do with myself! It feels amazing,” the singer, who won this year’s BRITS Critics’ Choice Award, told OfficialCharts.com.

“When La La La went to Number One, I wrote quite a lot of that song and it was kind of just as much mine as it was Naughty Boy’s, but having my own song at Number One is just absolutely incredible.”

Pharrell Williams’ former chart-topper Happy is at number two this week following the US superstar’s performance at the BRITS on Wednesday night (February 19), while last week’s number one, Rather Be by Clean Bandit, slips to number three.

Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera notches up her 24th UK Top 40 hit with Say Something, a collaboration with US indie band A Great Big World, which enters at number four.

Ellie Goulding, who collected the BRIT Award for Best British Female on Wednesday (February 19) to add to her Attitude Music Award last year (2013), has three singles in the Top 40 this week: How Long Will I Love You (number 25), Goodness Gracious Me (26) and Burn (35).
