LC:M Day 1, powered by Renault

By Joseph Kocharian

Day 1 of the LC:M

The sixth season of London Collections: Men kicked off yesterday and there was a definitely sense of ceremony to the day as were transported by our shiny gold Renault car, which whisked us from our humble offices to the the show spaces.

Our first stop was to Topman Design who continued their adventure into the 70s- the scope was huge, drawing on all sorts from their chosen decade. Everything from tartan glam rock, (both head to toe or finishing touches) patchwork stars mixed with stripes, kick flares  plenty of fringing and psychedelic prints were all incorporated, to give the collection the full 70s treatment. The ombré mohair coats and the shearlings helped beef up the skinny silhouette of the flares, and the Lightning bolts and patch stars added fun to the proceedings.

Our next pit stop was the Hospital Club, for the opening event, where Dylan Jones welcomed everyone including the ambassadors for this season: Douglas Booth, Oliver Cheshire, Dermot O’Leary, Tinie Tempah, Nick Grimshaw, Robert Konjic and Douglas Booth. We’ll be seeing a lot of them this weekend.

It was on to Somerset House next, to see the winner crowned for the International Woolmark prize- six brands each from  region of the globe competed for the coveted prize. Dylan Jones took to the stage again to announce that NYC brand Public School had taken home the prize.

The afternoon saw the return to catwalk shows, with MAN showing menswear’s bright young things. It went all American Horror Story for Kit Neale, with a trip to the circus. Eery music, the kind you would find under the striped tent- the collection, inspired by Fred G Johnson, Schiaparelli’s circus collection as well as typography from traditional travelling act posters.

As the rain set in, it was back to the golden attitude x Renault mobile where we rounded off the day at Christopher Shannon for a schooling on how to do sportswear with puffer jackets oversized sweats and even tracksuit poppers reimagined and reconstructed. A plastic bag motif (aka bags on heads and on the clothes) were inspired by photographers such as Nigel Shafran) a particular stand out piece were the corset  like knit panels on the jackets and tops, and sheen tracksuits

We rounded off the evening at the Marks & Spencer x Shortlist party, who put on a sublime event at the Rosewood Hotel- we caught up with our former cover star Oliver Cheshire, who was, as per usual dressed to perfection.

Day One: done!
