Student Pride announces their 2017 theme: #LetsTalkAboutSex
National Student Pride is returning for its 12th year in February.
More than 1,600 LGBT+ students from across the UK will be taking part in a weekend of festivities from 24-26 February, with a daytime festival on the Saturday (25 February) at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone campus.
Despite 2017 being the year the UK celebrates the 50th anniversary of gay sex between consenting men over the age of 21 being decriminalised, LGBT+ acceptance – and sex education – has a long way to go.
Across the weekend, Student Pride will explore everything from love and relationships to the rising levels of HIV, racism in the LGBT+ community and how apps are vastly changing the sexual landscape.
The opening-night party will kick off with drag kings and queens galore, including the fabulous Mary Mac who will be hosting the evening.
The daytime event on Saturday will focus on starting a national conversation about sex, pressing Education Secretary Justine Greening to take action. Her department recently said the time is right “to look again at how schools deliver high-quality personal, social, health and economic education including sex and relationship education.”
Saturday evening’s entertainment will include a party at G-A-Y Heaven and the weekend will be rounded off by the popular Sunday cinema event with a Mean Girls sass-a-long being promised.
