Watch | Miley Cyrus song gets push amid Oscars buzz

By Troy Nankervis

With the Academy Awards just around the corner, among this year’s hopeful Best Song contenders is Hands of Love, sung by Miley Cyrus on the soundtrack to LGBT love story Freeheld.

While nominations will not be formally announced until January 14, it appears Hands of Love has been overlooked, and so the Los Angeles LGBT Center has launched a campaign to ensure the track makes the Oscars shortlist, reports Deadline.

The non-profit LGBT organisation was inspired by the message of the song and has created a video of archive footage from various chapters of the civil gay rights movement, set to the original demo of the song as performed by the Grammy-nominated writer and producer Linda Perry.

After seeing Freeheld, Perry wrote and recorded a demo of Hands Of Love, which was sent to both Miley and the entire production team, and was included in the final cut of the film.

Already boasting more than 7.5 million plays on Spotify, Hollywood stars Tobey Maguire, Christina Aguilera and Perry’s wife, Sara Gilbert are hosting a party next week on Tuesday to continue generating the Oscar buzz.

Freeheld documents the real life story of New Jersey Police Lieutenant Laurel Hester, played by Julianne Moore, who fights to award to pension benefits to partner Stacie Andree, played by Ellen Page, after she is diagnosed with cancer.

The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016 in Hollywood.
