Watch Madonna’s touching tribute to David Bowie during Rebel Heart show

By Troy Nankervis

Madonna paid tribute to David Bowie in moving fashion during the Rebel Heart tour’s Houston stop last night, following the musical icon’s unexpected death over the weekend.

Singing a cover of Bowie’s classic 1974 anthem ‘Rebel Rebel’, the 57-year-old’s performance was accompanied by images of Bowie projected across a giant screen on stage at the Houston Toyota Center.

“This is all fun and games, and I am privileged to be able to do what I do, but I want to pay tribute to a man who inspired my career,” she told a packed stadium.

“If you haven’t heard about David Bowie, then look him up motherf***ers. He was one of the geniuses in the music industry, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 20th century, and he changed my life when I went to see him in concert in Detroit.

“He showed me that it was ok to be different. And he’s the first Rebel Heart that I laid eyes on.”

Madonna previously revealed she’d been left “devastated” by news of Bowie’s death in New York city on Sunday following a secret 18-month battle with cancer.

After last night’s gig, Madge posted several more tributes on social media, including a tweet to her 1.1 million followers in which she described Bowie as her “favourite rebel”.

For ‘Rebel Heart’ punters around the globe, the impromptu addition to the set must have been a welcome sigh of relief for a world tour that has been plagued with controversy.

After the power was cut in her Glasgow concert, Madonna was left to perform an unplugged set with the house lights on, while the ‘Holiday’ singer was also forced to publish a lengthy apology to fans for arriving over an hour late to her Manchester gig after experiencing a series of technical difficulties.
