Three gay sex workers were attacked with crowbars in Cologne, Germany.

The three men, aged 30, 31 and 40-years-old, were together near Cologne Eifeltor around 1am where two men, a 50 and 53-year-old, allegedly paid the trio for sex, Gay Star News reports.

During the encounter, the masked men approached the group and attacked the sex workers with crowbars as the two other men fled towards a nearby car park.

The attack left the 31 year old with a life-threatening traumatic brain injury and is currently in a coma. His two companions also suffered serious injuries.

German media refused to report the victim’s names or post pictures and police are currently investigating the crime as an attempted homicide.

The news comes after a shocking rise in hate crimes against the LGBT community in Germany.

Between January 1, 2017, and July 28, 130 hate crimes connected to sexual orientation had been reported.

However, only 102 hate crimes connected to sexual orientation were reported over the same period in 2016.
