The UK government is considering a ban on ‘gay cure’ therapy.
The government has refused to make conversion therapy illegal despite having previously condemned “any attempt to treat being gay, lesbian or bisexual as an illness.”
However, the Home Office have now revealed that they’re ready to bring an end to the controversial practice.
The Home Office will publish results of a National LGBT survey later this year, revealing just how much conversion therapy actually occurs in the UK. They will then use the results to help find new ways of ending ‘gay cure’ therapy.
Speaking to Gay Star News, a government spokesperson called the controversial practice “wrong” and stated the government understands that being LGBT “is not an illness to be cured”.
“In 2017, we conducted a national survey of LGBT people in the UK. It included questions about whether respondents have been offered or undertaken conversion therapy. This will help us investigate what additional steps we could take to end this practice.
“We have already been working with the main registration and accreditation bodies for psychotherapy and counselling practitioners, including the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), to develop a Memorandum of Understanding to put a stop to this bogus treatment.”
The spokesperson added: “We are currently analysing the responses to the survey, and will be publishing a response later this year.”
Meanwhile, a study from January found that over 600,000 US LGBT adults received the controversial practice as youths.
