A teenager who slashed open a man’s stomach with a machete in a homophobic attack has been jailed for 10 years.

Last year, Ibraima Touray-Drammeh, 17, was waiting near the gay nightclub The Boston in Northampton when he started hurling homophobic abuse at a man.

A fight ensued and the teenager pulled out a machete from his trousers and slashed a 20cm wound in his belly.

His victim tried to call for help but the teen kicked his phone out of his hand and ran away leaving the man struggling with his horrific wound.

During a court hearing at Northampton Crown Court, the jury heard how the teen had bought the machete just two days before the attack and video footage shows him joking with a group of friends – one of which was jailed earlier for watching the stabbing and not helping the victim.

Judge Adrienne Lucking said: “This is what happens when you carry weapons in public and injure other people.

“You walked through the town centre with a barely-concealed machete.

“[Your victim] was obviously incensed by this… then you waded back into the argument you yourself had started and produced the machete.

“You slashed him in the chest, in broad daylight, in public. You both ran from this badly injured man.

“He fell down bleeding, and saw his own intestines fall through his abdomen.”

According to the Northampton Chronicle, the victim was saved by police and was placed in a medically-induced coma on the way to hospital and required extensive surgery.

During the court hearing, Judge Adrienne added: “This offence is so serious it can only be met with an immediate custodial sentence… and I must impose an extended sentence in order to protect the public.”

Touray-Drammeh was handed a prison sentence on 10 years and eight months and must serve a minimum of seven years before considered for parole.
