A group of six boys broke the nose and cheekbone of an Irish author during a brutal homophobic attack.

Gavin McCrea – the author of ‘Mrs Engels’ – had just emailed a publisher about a second novel when he was approached by a gang of six boys, some as young as 12, in Dartry Park, in Dublin, earlier this month.

The gang – aged between 12 and 14 – threw stones at him before knocking him to the ground and began to punch and kick him in the face. They also hurled homophobic slurs at him during the brutal attack.

McCrea was rushed to hospital following the violent assault and suffered a broken nose and cheekbone.

The author opened up about the attack to the Spanish online publication, El Pais, and said going public was the ‘right thing to do’.

He added that he has been overwhelmed with love and support following the attack.
