The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have today announced their nominations for the 88th Academy Awards.

Presenting the nominees of the first category of Best Song was Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee alongside Guillermo Del Toro, who revealed crooner Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes have been nominated for ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, which headlined the latest James Bond instalment Spectre.

Despite taking out a Golden Globe last weekend for the song, Smith faces some stiff competition if he wants to bring home another accolade.

For her rendition of ‘Til it Happens to You’ from The Hunting Ground, Lady Gaga has been nominated in the same category, alongside David Lang’s ‘Simple Song #3’ from the film Youth, ‘Manta Ray’ from the documentary Racing Extinction, and ‘Earned It’ from Fifty Shades Of Grey.

For his portrayal of transgender artist Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl during 1920s Copenhagen, Eddie Redmayne has been nominated for Best Actor.

If he beats fellow contenders Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Byran Cranston (Trumbo), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Matt Damon (The Martian), Redmayne will collect his second Best Actor Oscar, following his 2015 win for portraying Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Hosted by Chris Rock, the Academy Awards will be broadcast across the globe on February 28 live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
