RuPaul is Attitude’s new Cover Girl: “I don’t think drag will ever truly be mainstream”

Attitude’s Style Issue launches today, with perhaps our most stylish Cover Girl ever: The one and only RuPaul.
In an in-depth interview inside the mag, the grand dame of drag tells us why her queens are changing the world one tuck at a time.
Although RuPaul’s Drag Race is abut to launch its seventh season, Ru says she doesn’t think it’ll ever be a truly mainstream proposition.
“I don’t think drag will ever truly be mainstream, because of everything that our culture holds dear. Drag’s whole purpose is to mock society; to call out hypocrisy. It will never been mainstream because people feel very at home with their hypocrisy and their double-standards. Looking back over the history of mankind, it was the shaman, the witchdoctor, who would remind mankind not to take itself too seriously.”
Ru also speaks about the oft-rumoured plans to make a UK version of Drag Race – superfan Jonathan Ross is certainly on board, but nothing’s been locked in as yet.
“It’s really up to the people who put on television shows! It’s not my call. I would love for it to happen,but it’s not something I decide! You can’t explain that to people… But of course, I would love to.”
