A prominent Russian LGBTQ rights activist has been found with multiple stab wounds and signs of strangulation in St Petersburg.

Yelena Grigoryeva’s body was found in bushes near her home in the Russian city on Sunday (July 21) according to the news website Fontanka.

Close friend and activist Dinar Idrisov wrote on Facebook following the news of Yelena’s death that she had been the victim of violence and death threats.

According to police – who did not confirm the death threats reports – a suspect has been detained in connection with her murder.
