Olly Alexander slams Germaine Greer's 'aggressive and horrifying' transphobia

Olly Alexander has publicly hit out at Germaine Greer following the feminist writer’s latest transphobic comments.

Greer has been embroiled in controversy over the last week after students at Cardiff University launched a campaign to ban her from speaking at an event due to her history of transphobic remarks. Earlier this year, 76-year-old Australian academic tried to defend her repeated derogatory remarks about trans women by arguing that transphobia “doesn’t exist”.

After withdrawing from the Cardiff University event in the wake of the campaign, Greer launched another foul-mouthed tirade, saying: “Just because you lop off your cock and then wear a dress, doesn’t make you a fucking woman”.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon (October 27), Olly slammed Greer’s “horrifying” comments, accusing The Female Eunuch author of “aggressive and violent” hatred.

“This is aggressive and violent hatred from Germaine Greer,” the Shine singer wrote. “It’s so horrifying.”

The 25-year-old – who became one of the most prominent celebrity backers of Stonewall’s anti-bullying campaign earlier this year – also reteweeted the LGBT charity’s denouncement of Greer’s recent behaviour.

The Stonewall pledge signed by Olly reads: “I will never be a bystander to bullying and teasing language. If I hear it, I will call it out and if I can, I will stop it” – and it looks like he’s taking it seriously.

Despite the fury induced by Greer’s remarks, Olly was back to his ususal chirpy self today, happily interacting with a pair of gay fans who attended Years & Years’ gig at Brixton’s O2 Academy last night (October 28), where the band performed hits from their Attitude award-winning debut album, ‘Communion’.
