Man shot while protesting Milo Yiannopoulos’ speech at University of Washington

By Fabio Crispim

A man is currently fighting for his life in hospital after he was shot while protesting against Milo Yiannopoulos’ event at the University of Washington on Friday (January 20).

According to the Seattle Time, the 32-year-old victim was protesting the controversy-baiting right-wing media personality’s appearance at the university where he delivered a speech.

A suspect handed himself in to police and a police spokesperson revealed that the man who fired said it was in self-defence. He also claimed that the victim was “some type of white supremacist” though the victim’s friends have denied the allegations.

The suspect was released without charges and has not yet been named.

Yiannopoulos’ speech at the university was delayed following large crowds of protestors. The protest itself was peaceful until a new group of protesters arrived and allegedly began throwing “bricks and paint” toward police other crowd members.

When news of the shooting made its way to Yiannopoulos, he continued his speech and said, “If we don’t continue, they have won.”

Yiannopoulos is perhaps best known for being a racist, sexist and transphobic troll, whose penchant for attacking minorities online and inciting his followers to do the same saw him permanently booted off Twitter in July this year.

He has also dismissed feminism as “cancer”, rape culture as “fantasy” and called for the LGBT+ movement to exclude trans people.

The investigation into the crime is ongoing.
