Lady Gaga and Sam Smith pick up Golden Globes as Ricky Gervais tears Hollywood apart

All the stars of tinsel town were out last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, with Lady Gaga and Sam Smith among the big winners.

In his opening monologue, master of ceremonies Ricky Gervais – never one to shy away from pushing the envelope – teased the audience of Hollywood’s finest as “sexual, deviant, pill-popping scum”, before picking out star names including Caitlyn Jenner.

“I’ve got to be nice tonight,” Gervais said. “I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner obviously, now Caitlyn Jenner of course. What a year she’s had.

“She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes.

“She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can you? Not at the same time.”

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga has taken her award-winning ways to the the screen after taking home the Best Actress award in a limited series for her portrayal of The Countess in the latest edition of American Horror Story: Hotel.

Taking to the stage in an elegant off-the-shoulder black dress, the 29-year-old Born This Way Singer said she felt “like Cher in that John Patrick Shanley film Moonstruck”.

“It’s one of the greatest moments of my life. I have to thank Ryan Murphy, you’re just a wonderful human being, you have believed in me so much and been such a good friend to me,” she said.

Gaga also thanked the cast of the American Horror Story: Hotel including Matt Bomer, Denis O’Hare, Cheyenne Jackson and Angela Basset.

“I could go through the entire cast because you’re all so talented, and because of you, I was able to shine, I guess,” she said.

“Thank you for sharing your talent with me. I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but music worked out first.”

Meanwhile, Sam Smith  Jimmy Napes received a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture, alongside Jimmy Napes, for his work on ‘Writing’s On the Wall, the theme song to latest Bond instalment Spectre.

“This has been the most interesting night of my life”, the 23-year-old said upon accepting the award.
