Elton John named the UK’s most charitable celebrity

Sir Elton John has been named the UK’s most charitable celebrity.

The legendary singer appears at the top of The Sunday Times Giving List, which takes an in-depth look at people living in the UK who have donated the highest portion of their wealth to charity.

John

The richest people in the UK donated over £2.5 billion to charity in 2014, which was an increase of 7.8% over the previous year.

John is the highest ranked celebrity on the list after donating a massive £24.1 million to charity – around 9% of his total wealth – most of which went directly into funding his HIV/AIDS foundations.

X Factor boyband One Direction donated £1.2 million in 2014 (0.92%), while fellow UK chart toppers Coldplay handed over 1.82% (£3.8 million) of their wealth to good causes.

Meanwhile, Supermarket owner Lord Sainsbury donated a massive £203.2 million last year, which amounted to over 40% of his total worth, making him the highest ranked individual overall.
