Michael Douglas’s performance as Liberace in Behind the Candelabra was honoured at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in Los Angeles last night (January 18).

Douglas took home the trophy for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries’, beating off competition from his Behind the Candelabra co-star Matt Damon, who played Liberace’s lover Scott Thorson.

Behind the Candelabra won the Film prize at last year’s Attitude Awards after being given a cinematic release in the UK. In the US, it was shown on premium cable network HBO and is therefore eligible for TV awards instead.

Other winners in the TV categories at this year’s SAG Awards included Brits Maggie Smith, who took home the ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series’ trophy for her role in Downton Abbey, and Helen Mirren, who won the ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries’ prize for her performance in Phil Spector.

In the film categories, Dallas Buyers Club stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto continued their run of awards season success after winning the prizes for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role’ and ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role’ respectively.

McConaughey stars in the acclaimed film as Ron Woodroof, a real-life Texas electrician who is told that he is HIV-positive and only has one month to live, while Leto co-stars as transgender AIDS activist Rayon. Both actors have already won Golden Globes for their performances and were honoured earlier this week (January 16) with Oscar nominations.

Other winners in the film categories included Cate Blanchett, who took home the ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role’ trophy for Blue Jasmine, and the cast of American Hustle, who collected the accolade for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture’.
