David Cameron’s mother ‘advised him against equal marriage’

By Shaun Kitchener

David Cameron’s own mother was against him pushing for marriage equality, according to Lord Ashcroft’s biography.

The book, Call Me Dave, has been a huge talking point all week thanks to certain allegations about a certain animal and a certain body part, but it’s also reportedly claimed that the PM was universally advised against legalising same-sex unions.

The Liberal Democrats initially put forward the bill, with support from Cameron and a small handful of ther Conservatives. Thanks to huge backing from Labour, it succeeded and entered law in 2014.

However, Ashcroft is said to write in Call Me Dave that Cameron’s mother, Mary, advised him against going forward with it – as well as several fellow Tories and religious leaders.

“I know, but David just won’t be told,” is what she apparently said when asked about the push-back.

Nicholas Soames, former Defence Minister, says he doesn’t think the PM actually knew how much opposition he had: “I really believe that had he known the scale of the aggro, he wouldn’t have done it.”

Several MPs who voted against the law have since U-turned, including Nicky Morgan.
