Prime Minister David Cameron has hailed equal marriage as “an important change” for England and Wales.

The first same-sex marriages in England and Wales will take place this Saturday (March 29), and the Prime Minister speaks about the historic occasion in a new article published in Attitude‘s special issue Love & Marriage.

“This is an important change brought home to me by a mum in my constituency recently who said: ‘I’ve got a straight son and a gay daughter and I now know I’m going to be able to go to both of their weddings’, Cameron says in the article.

The Prime Minister also discusses the wider-reaching message sent out by equal marriage, saying: “Making marriage available to everyone goes beyond individual relationships, proposals and weddings – it says something deeper too about the sort of country we are.”

He continues: “This is a country with proud traditions of tolerance, respect and equal worth. With this reform we are being true to those values. In turn we are sending a powerful message to young people growing up who are uncertain about their sexuality: we are telling them that they are equal.”
