Dan Savage challenges potential Republican presidential candidate who claims sexuality is a choice

By Ryan Love

Gay activist and journalist Dan Savage has responded to potential Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson’s claims that sexuality is a choice.

Retired neurosurgeon Carson dismissed comparisons between the civil rights movement and gay rights movement during an interview with CNN, stating that prisons prove that being gay is “absolutely” a choice.

He said: “Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”

Responding in his column for The Stranger, Savage called on Dr Carson to stand by his words and “put up or shut up”.

“Dear Dr. Carson. If being gay is a choice, prove it. Choose it. Choose to be gay yourself,” he wrote. “Show America how that’s done, Ben, show us how a man can choose to be gay. Suck my dick.

“Name the time and the place and I’ll bring my dick and a camera crew and you can suck me off and win the argument. Very sincerely yours, Dan Savage”

Carson has yet to respond to the challenge.
